Video Joy - Back to the Basics.
Baby Emily is doing great. Her umbilical cord fell off today, so she has a cute little bellybutton instead of a Frankenstein like piece of dead skin, and she slept almost all night long last night, so things are great on all counts. I'll get back to Video Joy this post, but look for more pictures and video of Emily in the future.
  • Sony hasn't been doing much right lately. Tens of thousands of their laptop batteries were recalled, their stock has been dropping, and the Playstation 3 is outrageously priced at $600 smackers. But I have to admit their commercials for their Bravia television sets are spectacular. The following uses no CGI (and very little editing) and about 700,000 gallons of paint on two abandoned buildings. Uber sweetness follows.

  • A 3 year old Japanese boy experiences the first (and certainly not the last) rejection in his life. Sorry to break it to you bud, but thats how it typically works.

  • What, you mean high-powered supermodels don't really look like that in real life? This as is not very surprising, but it is quite fascinating. I love Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, and I'm not even a woman. And no, thats not an opening for all of you to make rude remarks in the comments section.

  • I love natural disaster videos that are so amazing they look like they've been created using computer graphics.

  • And last but not least, a young Indian girl performs a feat that 1) cannont possibly be good for her and 2) makes me cringe all over as a male. Just imagine if that was a guy doing that and WHOOPS! someone left a rock in the middle of the road. Or a rusty nail. Nope, not a good thing.

Video Joy - Super Extra Special Edition

Today's video is the best one ever, bar none. Three days ago, Emily Ruth Derrick, my first born child, came into the world at 6:46 PM. She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 22 inches long. She is absolutely gorgeous, and Kristena and I are in love with her.

Here's her very first video, where she has hiccups for the first time outside of the womb.

And here are some pictures of her in all her sweet newness.

Video Joy - Gee golly, fajitas are swell!
  • Frank Miller, the comics genius who singlehandedly reinvented Batman ("Batman Begins" would not have been as incredible as it was if it wasn't for Miller's groundbreaking work), worked on a short comics mini-series called "300" a few years back. It depicted the heroic true-to-history battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans singlehandedly held back a Persian army numbering in the thousands. The Spartans were killed to the man, but the Persians were so distressed at their disproportiate losses that they eventully retreated and Greece was spared. Miller's sharp panels and grim storytelling made the comic a fascinating read.

Well, now its being adapted into a movie, and visually it looks brilliant. In all likelihood, it will be a very hard 'R,' so I might not even see it (I repented of sitting all the way through "Sin City"), but the promo is stunning. However, Warner Bros. have been on the copyright warpath, and every time trailer pops up on YouTube its immediately taken down. So, I uploaded it myself and now provide you with the exclusive promo.

  • Bill Clinton practially goes ballistic on Fox News during an interview. The offending question? "Why didn't you do more to stop Bin Laden and prevent 9/11?" I'm sorry, but whether or not every single cabinet member under you failed completely during your presidency is really a mute point. As President of the United States, you should take complete responsibility for everything that happened while you were in office. You know what they say about excuses...

And if you're interested in the entire 20 minute interview, check it out here.

  • I really had little interest in watching a video of the latest Tickle-Me-Elmo toy. Until I saw that it had over 1 million views on YouTube. And obviously, 1 million net-addicts with waaaaay too much time on their hands can't be wrong, so I took it for a spin. This toy laughs so hard that it borders on insanity, and its legitimately the creepiest thing I've seen in a long time, but I was laughing my high pitched girly whine of a laugh by the end.

  • And no Video Joy post is complete without a nice bit of mayhem and destruction. This is a thinly veiled ad for Milwaukee's Best Light, probably the most disgusting beverage on the face of the planet, but its still cool. I now present the Beer Cannon! Set to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"!

Video Joy - Now in Smaller Font!
While I wait for my computer to render here at work (one of the nice things about being an editor is you get to take periodic 'render' breaks), I thought I'd provide a nice, tasty update. And I think I'll start including the videos directly on the page so you don't have to go searching for them. See? I do care about you, I really do.

  • For those of you who watch 'Lost,' the next video will be sheer bliss. For those of you who don't, just skip it, as it will make absolutely no sense. Thankfully, some of you in the latter category are on their way to becoming better human beings (*cough cough* looks at Josh *cough*). So, just to lay the groundwork, ABC has been running an online game called the "Lost Experience" over the past few months. It included websites, secret codes, telephone numbers you called to hear cryptic messages, etc. I tried keeping up for a bit but it was way too immersive and required you to basically spend every waking hour poring over clues. The mystery revolved around Alvar Hanso and the infamous '4 8 15 16 23 42' number sequence. Well, some enterprising young chap took all the video bits discovered over the course of the game and put them all together in a nice little 6 minute video for our viewing pleasure. Watch and learn, but only if you want to find out what the numbers mean.

  • My incredibly talented friend Josh Smith has just posted a video on his page teaching the common lay man how to 'Speak Pirate.' I include it here in its entirety. Mike, I expect our next Bible study to be conducted completely in Pirate. Make sure that happens.

  • Take 5 voice over guys, stick them in a limo together, have them spout off meaningless one-liners fit for any movie trailer, and what do you get? Well...uh...actually, you get exactly....um....that.

  • And finally, a good old fashinoned bad-guy-chucks-grenade-at-cops-who-narrowly-toss-it-away-before-it-explodes video. Yeah, its been a while since I posted one of those. Had a hankering, and whaddaya know, here it is!

  • Lets start things off with a little controversy. First video up: Jesus Camp! Its a documentary about a kid's camp that teaches children how to prophesy, speak in tongues, and become evangelists. Supposedly its polarizing the Christian community: half love it and half think that it demonizes the church. Here is the official trailer and here is a segment that ABC produced. Watch them both and then add your two cents. Good, bad, bring on the debate. I'll kick it off myself in the comments section.

  • Weird Al raps about being White and Nerdy. Who can resist?
UPDATE: YouTube got all buddy buddy with the RIAA and pulled Weird Al's video down. Seriously, do these people have any concept of free publicity, or do they just love every opportunity they get to shoot themselves in the foot? Here's a fresh link to the video.

  • I love Dance Dance Revolution. I am not ashamed. I have the game and a pad with my playstation, which I like to pull out every now and then and display my considerably sweet moves on. I have been called 'lame', 'gay', and a 'pansy' for my love of the dance. I could care less. In fact, my brother and I even once talked about entering a competition together. I know that excites all of you to no end, so I'll just tide you over with this impressive display of DDR skillz by some other guy. Oh, my day will it come. Yes, it will.
